Higher Things Sermon 2012

+ Jesu Juva +

Malachi 4:1-5

Obviously, Malachi didn’t get the memo from headquarters.  You know, the memo that said:  NEVER PREACH GOD’S WRATH AGAINST ALL SIN AND EVERY SINNER!  NO MORE OF ALL THESE PROPHETIC CALLS FROM THE LORD TO REPENT!  WE’LL HAVE NONE OF THAT!  WE’VE HAD OUR FILL OF REPENTANCE PREACHING FROM MOSES, SAMUEL, ISAIAH, JEREMIAH, EZRA AND NEHEMIAH!  GOOD GRIEF!  THE CHURCH WILL NEVER BE MEGA WITH PREACHING LIKE THAT!  SO IT IS FORBIDDEN!

I’m sure Malachi got the memo from Prophet HQ.  He simply chooses to ignore it and he preaches REPENTANCE with abandon!  Some would say with reckless abandon!

He unleashes a full blast Word from the Lord sermon:  to Israel and to you!  The Lord has you in His sights!  The Lord has a Word to put into your ears!  LAW and GOSPEL!  WARNING and PROMISE!

In order to repent you!  To turn you:  away from your idolatrous sin to the one true God and Savior, Jesus!  To raise you from the dead and give you life!  To bring you out of darkness into the light!

Serious stuff!  Life or death serious!  Eternal life or eternal death serious!  Don’t put it off!  Listen!  Lift up your heads!  Because Malachi proclaims:  “Surely the day is coming!”

That’s the Day of the Lord!  The climax of all history!  Remarkably it happens when the eternal Word, Jesus Himself, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, takes on flesh and blood and pitches that bodily flesh like a tent smack dab in the midst of the world and our lives!  This “day of the Lord” includes the time from John the Baptist’s preaching and baptizing as the promised Elijah all the way through Jesus doing His Good Friday dying and His glorious Easter Sunday rising!

That “day of the Lord” is the who-for-us-men and for-our-salvation-moment!  Christ’s bloody dying!  His rising from the dead on the third day!  For you and for your salvation!  This is what Malachi means when he declares:  “the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.”

Would you blow off the “day of the Lord” that Malachi preaches?  Seriously, would you?  You would withhold your sin from Jesus?  Outside of His forgiveness?  You would do that?  You would not repent?  You would rather worship yourself and not Jesus?  Really?

Then here is the warning!  “The day of the Lord will burn like a furnace.  All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble and that day that is coming will set them on fire.  Not a root or a branch will be left to them.”  That’s quite a hellacious sermon!  And that’s how it will end if you will not repent and believe!

Doesn’t that kind of sermon just kill you?  It sure does!  Good thing!  It is good to be put to death:  especially the old Adam with all his sin and evil desires!

So that the Lord can do His cup of tea!  And that is to raise you from the dead!  This new creation is spelled:  F-A-I-T-H!  Faith in Jesus who died for the ungodly!  Who died for you!  Who endured the red-hot wrath of God in your place!  Who was damned with all your sin while hanging from the Tree!  And who now categorically promises:  “You are forgiven!  Heaven, not hell, is yours!  All your sin belongs to me and I answered for it!  It doesn’t belong to you anymore!”

That’s a promise on which you can live and even die!   It comes from the Lord Jesus Himself through His servant Malachi. You are healed.  Forgiven!  Rescued from the blazing, burning wrath of God’s “furnace!”

For the Son, Jesus, has risen!  He is the “sun of righteousness.” Now you bask in a different heat!  It is the bright healing warmth of Jesus – God’s salvation for you.  You have safety, refuge, and healing from the sting of sin in the shade of Christ’s wings!  You are not burned up stubble!  You are not ashes on the ground!  Instead, because of Jesus you are His little calves set free from the stalls of sin and death in order to frolic in the pasture of His forgiveness – the holy Church – His Twelve!

In the Name of Jesus.
