Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph, the son of David, can hardly believe what’s happening.  It’s incredible.  Inconceivable.  And yet it is happening.

His fiancée Mary is pregnant.  “So what!” you say.  “No big deal.  Happens all the time.”  Joseph is troubled.  He isn’t married to Mary yet.  And they haven’t been intimate at all.

So how can Mary be pregnant?  Has Mary been sleeping around?  No.  She’s still a virgin.  Well, virgins can’t get pregnant.  So what’s the deal?

“This is the how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:  His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.”

How do we confess this?  CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.  That’s how Mary is pregnant.  Mary gets pregnant with Jesus through the Holy Spirit filled Word of God put into her ears and heart.  CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.  BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY.

This is extremely difficult for Joseph to believe.  He thinks that it’s best to call off the wedding and let Mary spend the next nine months away from home.

So an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream.  The angel tells Joseph what you and I know.  “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, BECAUSE WHAT IS CONCEIVED IN HER IS FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT.  She will give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

There it is again:  “Because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

The Baby Boy Jesus growing in Mary’s belly is God’s work.  This is God’s will.  God’s will is that the Baby Boy Jesus is conceived in the Virgin Mary by the work of the Holy Spirit.

And then there’s another bit of good news.  Baby Boy Jesus is God Himself.  So He is also named “Immanuel.”  Immanuel means:  “God with us.”

“You are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.”  Jesus means “God saves.”  Jesus is that God.  Immanuel.  God with us.  To save us from our sins.

What are your sins?  Little ones?  Big ones?  Too many to count?  The wages of sin is death.  Eternal death.  Damnation.  That’s what you’ve earned.  That’s the paycheck you’ve got coming.

That is, until Baby Boy Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  He is Immanuel, God with us, to rescue you from the wages of your sin.  He takes them from you.  Answers for them at Calvary.  Takes the death and damnation paycheck that your sin earned as He hangs suffering and dead on the Cross.

And now you’re forgiven.  Your sins don’t belong to you anymore.  God doesn’t count them against you.  God is with you and for you in the Baby Boy Jesus.

Joseph won’t stand in the way of this magnificent plan of salvation for you, him, and the world.  So, “when Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord has commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.  But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son.  And he gave him the name Jesus.”

In the Name of Jesus.
